Introducing: Ultra - Our first premium Camp Snap filter

Over the past few weeks I have been working hard on our new filter, Ultra. This filter builds on some of the most popular filters yet, namely Kino and Expired and borrows a few ideas from some of the great film stocks of the past.

For this filter I wanted something that was a little more everyday, but that still carried some nice characteristics of film photography. I wanted it to be vibrant and fun, and bring up all those lovely feelings of nostalgia, but whilst keeping it quite safe in terms of adjustments so that its more reliable in the more varying conditions of everyday life.

The colour characteristics

I started this one with a lift of the shadows, giving it that classic milky shadow look thats familiar to so many of the film shots of the past. I then pulled some green and a tiny bit of cyan into this tonal range. In bright situations with stark shadows, this green is dark and almost imperceptible but adds a nice colour contrast to the picture. In softer more overcast conditions, the green is a bit more evident and presents itself as more of a green cast across the mid range. Which almost creates two looks depending on the light.

I then added a light pink/magenta cast to the highlights, complimenting that green in the shadows and giving all the bright whites in the image a candy floss like glow.

I scooped a bit of the mid-range to help with Camp Snaps tendency to shoot on the bright side, and I pulled in a modest S curve for contrast, and knocked a little saturation out to compensate.
